If you are struggling with stress, meeting with a therapist can potentially provide relief and clarity. At the beginning of my journey, I didn’t understand the vast differences that exist between therapists and therapies. In some cases, a generalist might be the right place to start. In other cases, you might need someone with more specific knowledge and skills. While I don’t specifically endorse any of the websites or clinicians listed below, I wanted to gather many different resources and directories into one place. Take your time to see who’s out there and think about what might be right for you.
How do I know if a therapist is good? This is tricky, but it’s a real thing. In my experience, word-of-mouth recommendations are an excellent place to begin! Trial-and-error can cost you time and money. Many communities and cities provide annual business rankings and recommendations through local publications, and that can also be a great starting point. You might browse through online directories or web searches and find that individual therapists have received star ratings or endorsements, and that can also be encouraging to see.
What’s the most important factor when choosing a therapist? Believe it or not, study after study has shown that the strength of the therapist-client relationship is the most important factor in a positive therapy outcome. I can personally attest to this. Read more about the therapeutic relationship here.
What do I do if I’m placed on a waiting list? I have experienced this multiple times, and I understand how you might be feeling. More about that here.

Psychology Today has one of the largest and simplest directories of mental health professionals. This is an easy way to find someone in your area. You can filter by insurance. I also recommend filtering by issues, identities, and/or types of therapy. You will likely find many generalists, which can be a great place to start.
If you are currently experiencing a mental health crisis, please contact your doctor or therapist. You can also visit your nearest emergency room. I am not a therapist, and this is not therapy.
